Music from Canterbury New Zealand

Yang ylang are Martin Langlands and friends

This time around with a lush new collection  of  tracks  from a period of live playing combined with exploration in electronicas deeper places. Stylistically I call it “ElectroIndieOnica”- A Spirited mix of Electronica-Guitars  and  vocals  adding character to the sound with lots of beats also slight  Ambient Resting Places for  contrast …. Diverse tracks that I feel are Original and very emotive, very well received by listeners and reviewers …

1 Into The Light…origins of this track started from  recorded jams featuring Bass-electric guitars combined with vocals from Sami West  a visiting Singaporean friend. Slight Dunedin-Indie flavour with lush textural synthesiser production inspired by 1977 Bowie Eno-tech  period.

2 Dragonfly…always have been fascinated with dragonflies and symbolism they represent –emergence-freedom-summer-free but short lived.

Breaks style beats-deep layers with Barret style vocal add to this a slight tribal feel and you have a flickering-hovering impression of a dragonfly in flight on a hot summers day.

3 Place Of The Dragon…early one summers morning I stoped at a high terrace at Rakaia Gorge, looking down stream over the vast wide open river bed was covered in pink cloud. A wonderful sight like a “river of clouds”. Later I described this to a friend, he replied “the place of the dragon” Musically I wanted to give the feel of surging flow –Maori tribes believed a water monster {taniwha}once lived here. Dub –Ambient-experimental feels.

4 Some Of Onea more aggressive style of House-Trance. Thematically exploring the notion of unity and caring for each other {naive I know} people waiting on medical lists-people arguing religion-scientist argue origins-brothers killing brothers-fundamentalism. “some say 5 million some say 1”

5 Creator and the Creature…another track evolved from live jams –quite grungy guitars and bass with a tech feel. Electroindieonica we call it.

Notions of genetic modification and general products of modern day nature abuse-we no like…Didymo mix ???

6 Can U Dream ?…a quirky-lushly textured {twisted house?}cut up track –peter pan –aboriginal dream time in the colour of tangerine. In some ways Inspired by NZ group “The chills” in early phase “The Lost ep” 1984 Martin Phillips spoke “goodnight Martin Goodnight Peter Goodnight World”

Strangely I am a martin my brother a Peter –Scottish upbringing? Reference here to  Bi polar-depression and a dumbed down world.

7 Cloudsurfing…Ambient-ethno inspired by the so beautifully overwhelming sensation of new born life –a surge knocks off your feet and into cloud waves pure we drift away...Musically derived from live jams featuring vocals by Sami West who brings an eastern perspective {he has Tibetan origins} to the mix .and polar bass guitars

8 Vanishing People…At 7 cross roads {leeston Canterbury NZ} lies a Pioneer cemetery  tombstone that reads“ in memory of  Frankie May died 3Aug 1895 aged 23 years-Ida Octavia died 4th nov 1899 aged 16 years”……. Thy will be done –very dearly remembered……today we walk  the very same land with different values -Questions  for you….???

9 Under The Microscope…”A Lake With 2 names” April 30 2004 {a portrait} becalmed we sat and waited for the breeze Father and Son. Father says how nothing has changed…… how tiny we are! Aloft in the mountains sitting in the tussock golden colours summers end……..becalmed..
